The deadline for submission of abstracts is 21 December 2018.

Instigated by artist, Mary Rosengren and her CSIRO host partner, Cris Kennedy, following their 2011 ANAT Synapse art/science residency, Spectra 2012 was held at the CSIRO Discovery Centre in Canberra, and brought together some of Australia’s leading artists and scientists discussing the use of images and data in the studio and the laboratory.

Theme

Collaboration between the arts and sciences contributes to the creation of knowledge, ideas and processes beneficial across both disciplines. Artists and scientists approach creativity, exploration and research in different ways and from different perspectives; when working together they open up new ways of seeing, experiencing and interpreting the world around us.

Spectra explores this increasing convergence of art and science and considers how each area impacts the other and how, together, they shed light on who we are and where we’re heading.

At the very heart of Spectra is our desire to showcase and celebrate the vanguard of Australian and New Zealand artists who continue to lead the world in experimental and interdisciplinary arts practice.

Dr Jill Scott

Dr Jill Scott is lecturer, professor and context provider with many years experience in the unique field of Art and Science research. She is Professor Emerita at the Institute for Cultural Studies in the Arts, at the Zurich University of the Arts (ZhdK) in Zürich and founded their Artists-in-Labs Program in 2000. She was the Vice Director of the Z-Node program- Planetary Collegium with 16 PhD graduates in clusters of art and science at the University of Plymouth, UK (2000 to 2016). Currently, she co-directs the LASER Salon in Zurich for Leonardo Society USA. Her own artwork spans 38 years of production about the human body, behaviour and body politics, and in the last 16 years she has focused on creative media art experiments about neuroscience, ecology and sensory perception called Neuromedia. She has written six books on art and science including,Artists-in-labs: Recomposing Art and Science (eds: Hediger, Scott 2016) and Transdiscourse 2 Turbulence and Reconstruction (ed: Scott 2015) both with de Gruyter press. She has served on many boards and juries including Science Xplore, Sitemapping (BAK Switzerland), ISEA international, and the Australian Research Council, and received international and national grants and sales for her media artworks.
